A microporous filter screen is a precision thin metal part with densely distributed tiny holes, commonly manufactured by photochemical etching, wire weaving, laser cutting or stamping. It separates impurities, solid particles and liquid droplets from gas or liquid media by physical interception.

Core Working Principle

The main filtration mechanism is size exclusion. The aperture of the screen is precisely controlled. When fluid flows through the mesh, particles larger than the pore diameter are trapped on the screen surface, while clean fluid and smaller particles pass through the pores freely.

There are two primary filtration modes:

  1. Surface Filtration Contaminants are captured on the outer surface of the screen. It is easy to clean and regenerate. This mode is widely adopted in automotive oil filtration, gas purification and beverage filtration.
  2. Depth Filtration Fine particles partly penetrate into the mesh structure. It provides higher particle holding capacity, yet cleaning becomes more difficult. It is suitable for continuous industrial separation scenarios.

Key Parameters That Affect Filtration Performance

  • Pore size: Defines the minimum particle size to be blocked. Consistent pore geometry ensures stable filtration efficiency.
  • Open area: The total area of all holes. Higher open area reduces flow resistance and increases fluid throughput.
  • Base material: 304/316 stainless steel, copper, nickel, titanium are mainstream choices. Material selection depends on working temperature, corrosion environment and conductivity requirements.
  • Thickness & flatness: Directly impact sealing performance after assembly. Poor flatness will cause bypass leakage and reduce filtration effectiveness.

Common Manufacturing Technologies

  • Photochemical etching: Ideal for ultra-thin metal filter screens. Features uniform micropores and burr-free edges, great for parts with dense micro apertures.
  • Wire weaving: Cost-effective for relatively large mesh sizes. Limited consistency for sub-0.1mm micro holes.
  • Laser cutting: Suitable for simple patterns, but micro holes may have heat-affected zones.
  • Stamping punching: High volume production for bigger holes, not recommended for ultra-fine micropores.

Typical Applications

  • Automotive: oil filter mesh, fuel filter screen, hydraulic filter
  • Medical & biotech: liquid purification, sterile filtration
  • New energy: hydrogen fuel cell fluid separation
  • Electronics: gas filtration, dust removal, electromagnetic shielding
  • Chemical industry: corrosive liquid filtration, industrial fluid separation

Summary

Microporous filter screen relies on physical size exclusion to achieve fluid purification. Photochemical etching is the preferred process when uniform micro holes and burr-free edges are required for high-precision filtration. Select proper material, pore size and open area based on your fluid medium, temperature and particle interception requirements.
