Oil filter mesh captures solid particles, metal debris and contaminants inside lubricating oil to protect engines, hydraulic systems and mechanical equipment. Selecting the right oil filter mesh directly affects filtration efficiency, oil flow rate and service life. Follow these key factors to select suitable oil filter mesh.

1. Select the Right Material

Material must withstand oil, temperature and corrosion in working conditions.

  • 304 Stainless Steel: Most common option for automotive oil filters. Good corrosion resistance, easy to form and clean, compatible with most engine lubricating oil.
  • 316 Stainless Steel: Higher anti-corrosion performance. Suitable for harsh environments with high temperature or acidic oil media.
  • Copper / Brass: Good thermal conductivity, used for some special hydraulic filtration, but limited anti-oxidation ability under high temperature.

2. Confirm Aperture Size

Aperture determines the particle size to be intercepted.

  • Smaller pore = higher filtration precision, but lower oil flow and higher pressure drop.
  • Larger pore = faster oil flow, but can only block bigger particles. Match pore size according to your required cleanliness standard. For automotive engine oil filtration, typical aperture ranges from 0.02mm to 0.2mm. Keep aperture consistent to avoid bypassing impurities.

3. Check Thickness & Mechanical Strength

Mesh thickness affects structural rigidity and flatness. Thin mesh saves space but may deform under oil pressure. For high-pressure oil circuits, select thicker substrate or add support structure. Ultra-thin etched mesh is widely used for compact filter assemblies.

4. Open Area & Flow Resistance

Open area refers to the percentage of total hole area on the mesh. Higher open area brings lower flow resistance and better oil throughput. When designing, balance filtration accuracy and open area. Do not blindly pursue ultra-fine pores which may cause insufficient oil supply.

5. Dimensional Tolerance & Flatness

Tight tolerance ensures good fitting with filter housing. Poor flatness will create gaps and cause unfiltered oil to bypass. For mass production, photochemical etching provides stable aperture tolerance and burr-free edges compared with laser cutting or woven mesh.

6. Manufacturing Method Selection

  • Photochemical Etching: Uniform micro apertures, no burrs, precise pore size. Ideal for high-precision custom oil filter mesh.
  • Woven Wire Mesh: Low cost for large pores. Pore uniformity is unstable for sub-0.1mm micro holes.
  • Laser Cutting: Good for simple large patterns, but micro holes have heat-affected zones.

7. Working Environment & Operating Parameters

Evaluate operating temperature, oil viscosity, pressure and chemical properties of the oil. High temperature and heavy load conditions require stainless steel with better heat and corrosion resistance.
