Photo etching for model parts is a precision subtractive manufacturing process to make ultra-fine thin metal components for scale models. The whole procedure uses photoresist and chemical corrosion instead of cutting tools. Here is the complete workflow of how to photo etch model parts.
- Design artwork Create 2D CAD drawings of model parts such as railings, meshes and decorative details. Convert drawings into black-and-white film artwork. All tiny features, gaps and outlines must be defined clearly.
- Metal sheet preparation Select thin metal material like brass, stainless steel or copper, commonly 0.02mm to 0.5mm thick. Clean the metal surface thoroughly to remove oil, dust and oxidation, ensuring good adhesion of photoresist.
- Laminating photoresist Apply dry film photoresist onto the cleaned metal foil. The photoresist is sensitive to UV light and forms a protective layer on the metal surface.
- UV exposure Place the film artwork on top of the photoresist layer. Expose the sheet under UV light. The areas exposed to UV become hardened, while hidden regions remain soft.
- Developing Use developer solution to wash away unexposed soft photoresist. This step reveals the metal areas that need to be etched away. The hardened resist protects the model part patterns.
- Chemical etching Immerse the sheet in etching solution. The exposed bare metal will be corroded away, leaving the protected patterns as finished model parts. Etching parameters are strictly controlled for consistent depth and clean edges.
- Stripping photoresist Remove the remaining hardened photoresist with stripping liquid. The delicate metal model parts are fully uncovered.
- Inspection and post-processing Check dimension tolerance, edge quality and surface finish. Parts can be cleaned, polished and separated from the frame for model assembly.
Key tips for photo etching model parts
- Keep metal thickness thin for fine miniature details.
- Ensure artwork line width matches material thickness to avoid broken tiny structures.
- Strict surface cleaning prevents pattern defects.
- Suitable for custom small batches and mass production of photoetched model kits.
Photo etching delivers burr-free, high-detail metal model parts widely used in ship, aircraft, tank, train and architectural scale models.
