battery metal components

PCM etching, also named photochemical machining or photo etching, is a non-contact subtractive metal fabrication technology widely adopted in the battery industry for manufacturing ultra-thin, intricate metal components for lithium-ion batteries, EV batteries and energy storage battery packs.

The PCM etching process applies photoresist coating, UV exposure and controlled chemical dissolution to selectively remove unwanted metal material. It does not apply mechanical punching force or high heat to the raw sheet, so finished battery components remain stress-free and burr-free. Burr-free edges are extremely critical for battery safety, as metal burrs may pierce separator films and cause short circuit risks inside battery cells.

PCM etching supports tight dimensional tolerances and micro fine patterns, which fits the miniaturization trend of modern battery designs. It works well with many battery-grade metals, including nickel, copper, stainless steel, nickel alloy and aluminum. No hard tooling is required, so engineers can quickly iterate designs for battery prototypes and move smoothly to mass production.

Typical Battery Components Made by PCM Etching

  1. Battery current collectors: Ultra-thin copper or nickel etched substrates for electrode coating
  2. Battery grids: Precision grids used in lead-acid and special energy storage batteries
  3. EMI shielding sheets: Thin metal shields to protect battery management systems (BMS)
  4. Battery shims & spacers: Custom thin shims for cell stacking and thermal assembly
  5. Micro filter mesh: Fine metal mesh for battery fluid and gas filtration

Core Advantages of PCM Etching in Battery Manufacturing

  • Stress-free processing: No residual metal stress, keeps material stability during battery cycling
  • Zero burrs: Eliminates sharp edges that may damage battery separators
  • High design flexibility: Complex micro patterns can be modified easily without mold cost
  • Consistent repeatability: Stable part dimension in large batch battery production
  • Suitable for ultra-thin metal sheets: Can process thin foils that stamping or laser cutting struggles with

Compared with stamping and laser cutting, PCM etching avoids heat-affected zones and micro cracks on thin metal foils. These defects will degrade battery performance and shorten service life. For energy storage and electric vehicle battery projects, PCM etching balances precision, safety and cost from prototype to volume manufacturing.

Our factory provides custom PCM etching service for the battery industry. We review customer CAD drawings, control etching tolerance strictly and carry out full inspection before shipment for all etched battery metal parts.
